Mission
LearnServe International equips high school students with the tools of business planning, innovative problem-solving, and cross-cultural fluency and challenges them to lead and join community-based social change efforts across the Washington, D.C. area and the world. LSI is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
Programs and Services
LSI works both broadly and individually with schools to foster the development of global awareness that works best for each institution. Our programs and services include:
- LSI Fellows: a year-long leadership and collaborative learning experience that turns area high school students into innovative thinkers and changemakers. Combining organization visits, technology, social entrepreneurship, and inter-cultural training, 60 high school students from public and private high schools across DC, Maryland, and Virginia learn how to collectively address the issues that must be addressed by their generation. In turn, students work with faculty at their home institutions to bring their experience into schools to create a broader response.
- LearnServe Trips: a life-changing, two-week, experience in a developing country for teacher-student teams from selected schools. School teams address pressing global problems and work with local and international organizations on sustainable solutions. Previous LearnServe trips have traveled to Paraguay, Zambia, Ethiopia, and China. In the summer of 2010, teams will travel to Paraguay and Zambia.
- Consulting: LSI provides schools with the resources and strategies to promote global awareness in their institution. LSI helps schools develop globally-focused symposia, provides a web-based international community where students and teachers work collaboratively, and works with schools to define the best way to increase global awareness in the school community.
