LearnServe South Africa
On the continent’s southernmost tip, South Africa is bordered by both the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. The “Rainbow Nation” is home to 54 million people as well as 11 official languages, the most of any country in the world, ranging from Afrikaans to Zulu. The population of South Africa is about 80% of Sub-Saharan African ancestry, but includes Africa’s largest communities of people of white, Asian (Indian), and multiracial descent. Approximately 65% of the population live in poverty.
LearnServe South Africa participants work with South African social entrepreneurs and social justice organizations, presenting the opportunity to support their work through hands-on volunteering. LearnServe South Africa participants will:
- Engage in peer-to-peer exchanges discussing topics such as youth leadership and identity
- Meet local social entrepreneurs and organizations, and gain an understanding of these organizations’ mission and work
- Hone their design thinking skills in a workshop with peers in a local children’s’ home, working together to design a project benefiting the childrens’ home
- Have the opportunity to visit museums, Robben Island, and other cultural activities as they seek to understand the South African cultural context
LearnServe South Africa provides students with the opportunity to meet and collaborate with South Africa’s people – and connect their experiences to their social ventures at home.
