Jamaica 2013, Day 12 – Hibernaculum and Domino

Ifetayo OlutosinJuly 5, 2013.   Today, we arrived at Source Farm after our long stay at the Bennett’s house. On the way there, a lot of people were under the impression that it would be dull, lifeless, and painful for the remainder of the time. Fortunately, when we arrived, it was beautiful. There was a cool ocean breeze and the land was nice and green. Celena, our coordinator from KBC, helped show us around. We were living in the “dorm,” which in the future is going to be used as a school house. They let us settle, and then led us out for orientation, which included a very fun name game. We were then informed of what we would be doing during our stay.

We were to build a pond—more specifically a hibernaculum. This is where animals live together in an ecosystem and a permaculture is created. We started working after lunch, which was curry chicken, rice, and salad. On this day, we laid out the tarp, and made an outline for where we would create a slope for the animals to be able to get in. We worked on this for a couple of hours, and then got ready for dinner. Dinner consisted of homemade pizza and salad. It was amazing!!! We then went down to the Square, and got to hang out with the locals and play Dominoes. It was really fun, and was a good way to experience their culture at the fullest. It was a really fulfilling day, and we cannot wait for tomorrow!
