To Be Somewhere Else | Celebrating Ten Years

“At the end of every June I feel like I’m supposed to be somewhere else,” shared James Cunningham in an interview with Advisory Board member Bob Cullen.

When it comes to LearnServe, James has done it all. He joined LearnServe Founder Hugh Riddleberger and a team of students and teachers in 2006 on LearnServe’s second summer service program in Ethiopia. The following four summers he traveled to Zambia with LearnServe. His two children Ayinde and Niani are both alumni of the LearnServe Zambia and LearnServe Fellows Programs. Along with Ginea Briggs, James serves as LearnServe Advisor for the School Without Walls. And James is also a member of the LearnServe Advisory Board.

James Cunningham has seen the depth of impact that LearnServe’s programs have had both on our partner organizations overseas, and on the LearnServe students who participate in these programs. James himself — through his photography and his stories — continues to share this curiosity, global understanding, and passion for a cause with his students.

In recognition of his dedication to LearnServe and commitment to opening his students’ eyes to the world, we are pleased to honor James Cunningham with the Global Perspective Award at LearnServe’s Ten Year Anniversary Gala on November 6, 2013.

Over the next four weeks, we will introduce you to James Cunningham and seven other students and teachers whose lives were touched by LearnServe. You can see our first interview clip with James Cunningham online here. Watch our YouTube channel and other social media to see the videos as they’re released.

Enjoy! And we hope you will join us on Wednesday evening, November 6, as we celebrate LearnServe’s first decade.
