LearnServe Jamaica 2016, Day 9: Mentors and Success

AlonzoJuly 2, 2016 – Although I felt that today was going to be a long and stressful day, I was so excited to visit the Trenchtown Cultural Museum to learn more about the late great Bob Marley.

Bob Marley is a musical favorite of mine.  Bob Marley was influenced by Rastafarians who played an important role in his life.  I feel that if Bob Marley wouldn’t have met his mentors, then Marley would not have become who he became.  This showed me the importance of mentors in my own life. Mentors can help improve a person’s behavior and thought process.  I am happy that I have a mentor in Mr. Douglas because I feel his guidance will have a great effect in my life.  Marley’s life was largely influenced by those around him and I know that he could not have reached success without those loved ones who surrounded him.

My day ended with a group activity called the “Privilege Walk.”  The Walk was designed to highlight where people stand on the road to “success.”  It made me understand that some people had head starts and others have been held back.  This activity was very important to me because it lets me and LearnServe members know who are working hard to become great and overcome any challenges that they may have in their own journey.

Overall, I had a pretty exciting day.  I learned about one of my musical legends and I learned about people and various paths to success.
