<p>After ending our time at Daughter’s Vision, we visited a small start-up organization called Amila (meaning, <em>She Is Precious” </em>in Nyanja) founded by a woman named Kasonde (Kassie) and her partner, Aunty D, which was definitely an eye opener. Clarence and Jermaine began talking to Kassie at the Dutch Market on Saturday where she was selling leather earrings. That’s how we learned about her organization, so adding her to the itinerary was a last-minute decision. But, one I’m glad we did because it was truly inspirational! </p>
<p>Amila helps women escape sex trafficking and learn new trade skills to help them earn a living and hopefully heal from their traumatic experiences. Most of the women in sex trafficking are forced to be there. They come from dysfunctional or impoverished backgrounds and do not have a monthly income, so prostitution is their last resort. Kassie shared stories and personal experiences of some of the women, as well as some of what she witnessed in Thailand where she first worked for a year and a half with an organization that fights sex trafficking. </p>

<p>We learned that large numbers of women from Africa are being trafficked to Thailand where they are severely mistreated, often being told that they owe large debts to those who brought them there which they can almost never pay off. These debts are made up and basically keep them in captivity. Others are drugged and beaten. Some make it out but come back to the same circumstances in their communities from which they left where they may also be shamed for what happened to them. Believe it or not, many return to prostitution as it is the only way they know of to make money, especially if they have children. While being sex trafficked, if they become pregnant or contract a disease, they often become homeless because their “pimps” or “madams” have no more use for them. Many of these women are living with HIV. </p>
<p>After returning to Zambia, Kassie said she had a calling to help women working as prostitutes in her own country where sex workers make as little as 100K ($8) in a 10 hour shift of 8pm to 6am. Unfortunately, prostitution is on the rise in Zambia and these women are looked down upon by most of society, so it is a difficult issue to address. But organizations like Amila are slowly starting to address it while connecting with other similar organizations worldwide who are already doing this work. One big challenge for Kassie, though, is funding. Most foundations want to fund programs that have already proven themselves, so it’s much harder to find money for smaller start-ups like Amila. It seemed like connecting Kassie to our Zambian trip leader Japhet, though — who has access to many more people and resources through the work he does — could hopefully benefit her in the future. </p>
<p>Our conversation made me reflect, and put life into perspective. I realized how fortunate I am and that the things I take for granted are worth cherishing. The conversation from one social entrepreneur to another was also very helpful and connecting. As a social entrepreneur in the LearnServe Fellows program, I am working on creating an after-school program to address some negative social behaviors in my school. One of the more important takeaways I received from the conversation with Kassie and Aunty D is their determination. Their drive to start an organization about a strong social issue without any sort of financial support opened my eyes to believe that difficult things are possible if you have the passion and vision. It was inspirational! Their drive and determination will be a reminder for me to work harder and become a better citizen in my own community as I work through my own successes, trials and triumphs. </p>

We have been preparing for months leading up to today. We had to be at the airport at 4am! Unfortunately, our flight got delayed in Miami. We were waiting for take-off for two hours, but we eventually got to Jamaica. It was a bumpy flight, and it hurt my ears, but they popped back a few hours later.</p>
<p>Arriving in Jamaica was great. It wasn’t really hot but it was humid. We met Jason Anderson, our in-country leader at the airport. He is Jamaican and from Kingston. He picked us up in a big purple bus and first took us to the grocery store so we could buy snacks. It was hard because we had to convert everything from Jamaican dollars into American dollars and it seemed really expensive ($1 US Dollar = $120 Jamaican Dollars). Then he took us to Shortwood Teachers College (a college teaching program) campus and we arrived at our new home.</p>

We didn’t expect our temporary home to look like this. Windows open, loose goats in the street, and limits to how much water we could use. I was nervous to take a shower because they told us the water would be cold but it was actually really hot. Even though it was a bit dirty and so humid when we moved in, Team Jamaica got comfortable in the new environment fast. We made it our own. We put a fan in every room and moved the furniture around to make a circle for our meetings.</p>
<p>Coming to Jamaica has been a huge eye opener. Seeing how people live and maneuver around the city (they drive on the left side of the road!) is very different from home. There was a lot of trash on the ground, more than I was expecting. I was surprised to see a MAC store at the mall as well because I didn’t know MAC was an international store.</p>
<p>I had to adapt quickly to experience all of the new things. Coming to a whole new country with different weather, food, environment, and culture is surprising. I’ve realized I have to change my mindset because I know that we are going to be here awhile. We have to get used to it all because this is just the beginning – we have 15 more days to go!</p>

We started our day with a hardy breakfast made by the hotel chefs. We then got on the bus and traveled to Victoria Falls, which the locals call “ Mosi-Oa-Tunya.” The falls were very beautiful. As we continued to explore we crossed a bridge that went really close to the waterfall. By the end of the bridge everyone was soaked from the mist. We then walked twenty minutes down the cliffs to the “ Boiling Pot”. It was a very unique site, where we all took a group picture and a couple of selfies. As we made our way back to the top, a family of baboons accompanied us. This was a great moment for me because I never seen a monkey outside of a cage. However, others weren’t as excited as I was! Some of the LearnServe girls ran out of fear of getting their belongings snatched. Now I can say that I shared a sidewalk with wild monkeys.</p>
<p>After the falls we went to the market where locals traveled from their villages to sell crafts. The next activity was going on a jeep safari. We boarded jeeps and headed off into the wild. As we traveled we saw elephants, impala, crocodile (which is very tasty; we had it on pizza at a local restaurant), zebras, and even rhinos. The rhinos were the best part to see because we got off the jeep and got really close. We had to be escorted by police to see them. The White Rhino is in danger of becoming extinct so they have to be protected by armed guards due to poaching. Lastly we ended the night at the waterfront Café. We had a table that had the perfect view of the Zambezi river.</p>
