I had never traveled to Africa before. As a person of African ancestry, stepping on the shores of Africa felt like a home-coming; I was returning to the land of my ancestors. </p> <p>I was equally excited, and nervous, to work with the girls at Daughter’s Vision. In our earlier sessions, I had learned that most of the girls were either orphaned or afflicted with chronic illnesses. Initially, I was uncertain if I could relate to them. I did not know what to expect. When <a href="http://learn-serve.org/2017/07/02/learnserve-zambia-2017-teaching-at-daughters-vision-630-2/">I arrived at Daughter’s Vision for the first time</a>, I immediately fixated on how joyous the girls were despite their harrowing circumstances. With their almond-shaped eyes, sunkissed skin and warm smiles, I saw images of the young girls in my own neighborhood. I saw a reflection of myself. They were the most eager students I had ever encountered. Teaching and connecting with them felt effortless. Leaving the center was difficult, because I did not think I would see them again. </p> <p>I was elated when, two years later, I was asked to return as an intern. Not only would I get to return to a country that felt like home, I also would be able to see the girls again. Seeing Daughter’s Vision again felt so emotional. It almost felt as if I had never left. I inhaled deeply, because the smell of the soil brought back memories of me dancing with the girls two years prior. I couldn’t help but to smile every second I was there. </p> <figure class="wp-block-image"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1600" height="1200" data-attachment-id="12289" data-permalink="https://learn-serve.org/2019/07/02/learnserve-zambia-day-9-returning-to-daughters-vision-an-aspiring-social-entrepreneur/48153451017_92bf36b32b_o/" data-orig-file="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2019/07/48153451017_92bf36b32b_o.jpg" data-orig-size="1600,1200" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="48153451017_92bf36b32b_o" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2019/07/48153451017_92bf36b32b_o-400x300.jpg" data-large-file="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2019/07/48153451017_92bf36b32b_o-1024x768.jpg" src="http://learn-serve.org/assets/2019/07/48153451017_92bf36b32b_o.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-12289" srcset="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2019/07/48153451017_92bf36b32b_o.jpg 1600w, https://learn-serve.org/assets/2019/07/48153451017_92bf36b32b_o-400x300.jpg 400w, https://learn-serve.org/assets/2019/07/48153451017_92bf36b32b_o-768x576.jpg 768w, https://learn-serve.org/assets/2019/07/48153451017_92bf36b32b_o-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://learn-serve.org/assets/2019/07/48153451017_92bf36b32b_o-830x623.jpg 830w, https://learn-serve.org/assets/2019/07/48153451017_92bf36b32b_o-230x173.jpg 230w, https://learn-serve.org/assets/2019/07/48153451017_92bf36b32b_o-350x263.jpg 350w, https://learn-serve.org/assets/2019/07/48153451017_92bf36b32b_o-480x360.jpg 480w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /></figure> <p>When the kids were separated into their teaching groups, I instantly joined the reading group. I had to remind myself to step back and to allow this year’s LearnServe students to direct the teaching. It was bittersweet to see them teaching. On one hand, I had missed the rush I experienced after teaching. On the other hand, I was so proud to see Romeo, Asta, and Bilena working so well teaching as a unit. </p> <p>Seeing Ms. Gladys gave me the inspiration I needed to continue my LearnServe venture, which is to prepare and to send pre-packaged lesson plans to Daughter’s Vision. She even helped me think of a possible program name: Ukutemwa, which is the word “love” in the local Bemba language. I was touched when I she thanked me for the materials I donated last year. I cannot wait to keep sending supplies. </p> <p>I am also very thankful for Japhet, who is one of the leading people in the Zambian organization “Africa Directions.” He graciously traveled with us and exposed us to Zambian history and culture. We additionally learned that sex education needs to be at the forefront of youth initiatives. Being a part of LearnServe Abroad Zambia again was truly an extraordinary experience. I was happy to learn about Zambia more in-depth. Being there has opened my eyes to a future of possibilities. I learned more about myself. I realized that in order to see the change that I seek, I must take action and not idly observe. </p> <figure class="wp-block-image"><img decoding="async" width="1472" height="1104" data-attachment-id="12290" data-permalink="https://learn-serve.org/2019/07/02/learnserve-zambia-day-9-returning-to-daughters-vision-an-aspiring-social-entrepreneur/whatsapp-image-2019-07-02-at-10-39-45-am/" data-orig-file="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2019/07/WhatsApp-Image-2019-07-02-at-10.39.45-AM.jpeg" data-orig-size="1472,1104" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="WhatsApp Image 2019-07-02 at 10.39.45 AM" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2019/07/WhatsApp-Image-2019-07-02-at-10.39.45-AM-400x300.jpeg" data-large-file="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2019/07/WhatsApp-Image-2019-07-02-at-10.39.45-AM-1024x768.jpeg" src="http://learn-serve.org/assets/2019/07/WhatsApp-Image-2019-07-02-at-10.39.45-AM.jpeg" alt="" class="wp-image-12290" srcset="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2019/07/WhatsApp-Image-2019-07-02-at-10.39.45-AM.jpeg 1472w, https://learn-serve.org/assets/2019/07/WhatsApp-Image-2019-07-02-at-10.39.45-AM-400x300.jpeg 400w, https://learn-serve.org/assets/2019/07/WhatsApp-Image-2019-07-02-at-10.39.45-AM-768x576.jpeg 768w, https://learn-serve.org/assets/2019/07/WhatsApp-Image-2019-07-02-at-10.39.45-AM-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https://learn-serve.org/assets/2019/07/WhatsApp-Image-2019-07-02-at-10.39.45-AM-830x623.jpeg 830w, https://learn-serve.org/assets/2019/07/WhatsApp-Image-2019-07-02-at-10.39.45-AM-230x173.jpeg 230w, https://learn-serve.org/assets/2019/07/WhatsApp-Image-2019-07-02-at-10.39.45-AM-350x263.jpeg 350w, https://learn-serve.org/assets/2019/07/WhatsApp-Image-2019-07-02-at-10.39.45-AM-480x360.jpeg 480w" sizes="(max-width: 1472px) 100vw, 1472px" /></figure> <p>As an aspiring psychiatrist and social entrepreneur, I hope to establish my own sister school in Zambia, creating a positive impact on the lives of children, treating the emotional difficulties impeding learning, and expanding educational opportunities to all. I realize that there will be times when people succumb to the pressures and burdens of their struggles. There is no simple solution; however, it is my goal to help others learn so that they can reach their highest potential. I am forever grateful for having had the opportunity of learning from the daughters of Zambia, for they have taught me how to boldly face obstacles as I embrace the joys of living and of learning. </p> <p>Anisa T., Wheaton High School</p> <p>The post <a href="https://learn-serve.org/2019/07/02/learnserve-zambia-day-9-returning-to-daughters-vision-an-aspiring-social-entrepreneur/">LearnServe Zambia Day 9: Returning to Daughter’s Vision, an Aspiring Social Entrepreneur</a> appeared first on <a href="https://learn-serve.org">LearnServe International</a>.</p> ]]></content:encoded> <wfw:commentRss>https://learn-serve.org/2019/07/02/learnserve-zambia-day-9-returning-to-daughters-vision-an-aspiring-social-entrepreneur/feed/</wfw:commentRss> <slash:comments>0</slash:comments> <post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">12287</post-id> </item> <item> <title>LearnServe Zambia 2018, Day 12: The Human Connection</title> <link>https://learn-serve.org/2018/07/07/learnserve-zambia-2018-day-12-the-human-connection/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=learnserve-zambia-2018-day-12-the-human-connection</link> <comments>https://learn-serve.org/2018/07/07/learnserve-zambia-2018-day-12-the-human-connection/#respond</comments> <dc:creator><![CDATA[learnserve]]></dc:creator> <pubDate>Sat, 07 Jul 2018 20:38:43 +0000</pubDate> <category><![CDATA[LearnServe Abroad]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Wheaton High School]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Zambia]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Zambia '18]]></category> <guid isPermaLink="false">http://learn-serve.org/?p=11170</guid> <description><![CDATA[<p>Saturday, July 7 – As humans each of us has a deep connection with the Earth. We live alongside the Earth and depend on it. The Earth is our livelihood, and it deserves love and protection in return for what it endlessly gives to us. Unfortunately, we as humans misunderstand the word endless when it comes to protecting the Earth. We use its resources but don’t think to consider replenishing them. In response, issues of global warming and climate change have become very prevalent.</p> <p>Today we met Uncle Benj who really understands the words “love and protection.” Uncle Benj is known as the Director of Trees for the organization Green Pop. Green Pop’s mission is to “collaborate with passionate individuals and organizations with years of experience to run contextually relevant environmental projects across Sub-Saharan Africa,” to restore and protect our biodiversity. As the Director of Trees, Benj works <img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="11172" data-permalink="https://learn-serve.org/2018/07/07/learnserve-zambia-2018-day-12-the-human-connection/42399763595_98e79af549_z/" data-orig-file="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2018/07/42399763595_98e79af549_z.jpg" data-orig-size="480,640" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="42399763595_98e79af549_z" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2018/07/42399763595_98e79af549_z-225x300.jpg" data-large-file="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2018/07/42399763595_98e79af549_z.jpg" class="size-medium wp-image-11172 alignright" src="http://learn-serve.org/assets/2018/07/42399763595_98e79af549_z-225x300.jpg" alt="" width="225" height="300" srcset="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2018/07/42399763595_98e79af549_z-225x300.jpg 225w, https://learn-serve.org/assets/2018/07/42399763595_98e79af549_z-230x307.jpg 230w, https://learn-serve.org/assets/2018/07/42399763595_98e79af549_z-350x467.jpg 350w, https://learn-serve.org/assets/2018/07/42399763595_98e79af549_z.jpg 480w" sizes="(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px" />towards a spike in the population of vegetation around the world. To do this he has incorporated various individuals and groups that envision the same thing, to collectively work together to replenish the Earth’s vast variety of resources. With Green Pop we had the opportunity to plant orange trees at a local primary school in Livingstone, Zambia. The purpose of this was for the children at the school to continue to foster the Green Pop vision by protecting and nurturing the orange trees. Thus the generations to come will have a beautiful Earth to enjoy in the future.</p> <p>Later, we had the opportunity to camp in Livingstone. By doing so we saw the perspective of an environmentalist. This experienced allowed us to really connect with nature on a personal level and really understand the value of being an environmentalist. Being a environmentalist, one experiences joy once they have done something to protect and restore biodiversity. This experience also helped us to understand the impact we have on the planet, both to create and to destroy, and how we can help create a beautiful green Earth.</p> <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="11173" data-permalink="https://learn-serve.org/2018/07/07/learnserve-zambia-2018-day-12-the-human-connection/28434891647_a5afd13779_z/" data-orig-file="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2018/07/28434891647_a5afd13779_z.jpg" data-orig-size="640,480" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="28434891647_a5afd13779_z" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2018/07/28434891647_a5afd13779_z-400x300.jpg" data-large-file="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2018/07/28434891647_a5afd13779_z.jpg" class="alignleft wp-image-11173 size-medium" src="http://learn-serve.org/assets/2018/07/28434891647_a5afd13779_z-400x300.jpg" alt="" width="400" height="300" srcset="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2018/07/28434891647_a5afd13779_z-400x300.jpg 400w, https://learn-serve.org/assets/2018/07/28434891647_a5afd13779_z-230x173.jpg 230w, https://learn-serve.org/assets/2018/07/28434891647_a5afd13779_z-350x263.jpg 350w, https://learn-serve.org/assets/2018/07/28434891647_a5afd13779_z-480x360.jpg 480w, https://learn-serve.org/assets/2018/07/28434891647_a5afd13779_z.jpg 640w" sizes="(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /></p> <p>Just as all humans have a connection with the Earth, we also have a connection with each other. On a daily basis we interact with each other and should treat each other equally with love, compassion and understanding. Unfortunately there is not that much love and understanding focused towards special needs individuals living in Zambia. Today, we had the opportunity to meet Loveness. She also understands the meaning of the words “love and protection.”</p> <p>Loveness is an amazing young woman who created the Loveness Hangoma Foundation that focuses on making a difference in the lives of the special needs population in Zambia where these children are often overlooked or physically hidden from the public by their parents. As adults they struggle to find work because of their disabilities. Today, we had the opportunity to meet some of the women involved in her program: her sister Sarah, and two of the women in her program, Claudia and Precious. Sarah has supported Loveness since the beginning helping to run this program. Sarah has even traveled to different parts of Zambia to start sister programs for the Loveness Foundation.</p> <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="11175" data-permalink="https://learn-serve.org/2018/07/07/learnserve-zambia-2018-day-12-the-human-connection/43254224552_23d49763ac_z/" data-orig-file="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2018/07/43254224552_23d49763ac_z.jpg" data-orig-size="409,640" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="43254224552_23d49763ac_z" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2018/07/43254224552_23d49763ac_z-192x300.jpg" data-large-file="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2018/07/43254224552_23d49763ac_z.jpg" class="size-medium wp-image-11175 alignright" src="http://learn-serve.org/assets/2018/07/43254224552_23d49763ac_z-192x300.jpg" alt="" width="192" height="300" srcset="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2018/07/43254224552_23d49763ac_z-192x300.jpg 192w, https://learn-serve.org/assets/2018/07/43254224552_23d49763ac_z-230x360.jpg 230w, https://learn-serve.org/assets/2018/07/43254224552_23d49763ac_z-350x548.jpg 350w, https://learn-serve.org/assets/2018/07/43254224552_23d49763ac_z.jpg 409w" sizes="(max-width: 192px) 100vw, 192px" />Claudia is a fashion designer who started the Trash Fashion Collection. Her collection is made up of recycled materials from the community. She holds a large fashion show every year with models from the Loveness Foundation. This fashion show brings awareness to the disabled community in Zambia and also highlights the value of recycling and protecting the environment. Claudia is also a teacher. She teaches English and math to disabled children at Loveness Foundation. Precious, is a up-and-coming caterer. She loves to cook Italian food and occasionally cooks for the community. She is hoping to have her own restaurant soon.</p> <p>Talking with Loveness about her struggles to continue the foundation, she mentioned that she doesn’t always have sufficient funds to support these kids, but she doesn’t give up and neither do the kids. They always come up with a solution, overlooking the bad and focusing on the good. She gave an example of times when she did not have food to feed the kids and tried to send the them home, but among themselves they gathered enough Kwacha for a <img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="11174" data-permalink="https://learn-serve.org/2018/07/07/learnserve-zambia-2018-day-12-the-human-connection/43304096981_dd63a117c5_z/" data-orig-file="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2018/07/43304096981_dd63a117c5_z.jpg" data-orig-size="640,480" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="43304096981_dd63a117c5_z" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2018/07/43304096981_dd63a117c5_z-400x300.jpg" data-large-file="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2018/07/43304096981_dd63a117c5_z.jpg" class="size-medium wp-image-11174 alignleft" src="http://learn-serve.org/assets/2018/07/43304096981_dd63a117c5_z-400x300.jpg" alt="" width="400" height="300" srcset="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2018/07/43304096981_dd63a117c5_z-400x300.jpg 400w, https://learn-serve.org/assets/2018/07/43304096981_dd63a117c5_z-230x173.jpg 230w, https://learn-serve.org/assets/2018/07/43304096981_dd63a117c5_z-350x263.jpg 350w, https://learn-serve.org/assets/2018/07/43304096981_dd63a117c5_z-480x360.jpg 480w, https://learn-serve.org/assets/2018/07/43304096981_dd63a117c5_z.jpg 640w" sizes="(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" />meal just to stay with her because she gives them so much love and care, more than they would receive at home. With her foundation, Loveness cares for and empowers these individuals, molding them into strong, independent people who realize they are truly no different from everyone else. She provides them with important skills. Loveness even does campaigns to advocate for the disabled and bring awareness to the positive and productive role they have in their community. Loveness has such an impact that these women and children call her Mommy Love. This shows the gratitude and love that they have for Loveness. Just being there for them and interacting with them in a way others would not is so important in their lives.</p> <p>I believe Uncle Benj and Loveness are both courageous for what they do. They both saw a need in their community and took action without hesitation. With such big projects like these, that require lots of effort, funds, and support. Some people would have given up, but Uncle Benj and Loveness persisted until they achieved their goals. And they didn’t stop there: every day they set new goals to accomplish. With faith in their success, they keep going despite discouraging comments from those around them at times. I just want to say thank you to them on behalf of LearnServe because we respect and believe in what they do. They deserve so much credit. Thank you.</p> <p>Afia-Grace H., Wheaton High School</p> <p>The post <a href="https://learn-serve.org/2018/07/07/learnserve-zambia-2018-day-12-the-human-connection/">LearnServe Zambia 2018, Day 12: The Human Connection</a> appeared first on <a href="https://learn-serve.org">LearnServe International</a>.</p> ]]></content:encoded> <wfw:commentRss>https://learn-serve.org/2018/07/07/learnserve-zambia-2018-day-12-the-human-connection/feed/</wfw:commentRss> <slash:comments>0</slash:comments> <post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">11170</post-id> </item> <item> <title>LearnServe Zambia 2017: Farming at Greenpop (7/9)</title> <link>https://learn-serve.org/2017/07/11/learnserve-zambia-2017-farming-at-greenpop-79-2/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=learnserve-zambia-2017-farming-at-greenpop-79-2</link> <comments>https://learn-serve.org/2017/07/11/learnserve-zambia-2017-farming-at-greenpop-79-2/#respond</comments> <dc:creator><![CDATA[learnserve]]></dc:creator> <pubDate>Tue, 11 Jul 2017 17:56:13 +0000</pubDate> <category><![CDATA[LearnServe Abroad]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Wheaton High School]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Zambia]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Zambia '17]]></category> <guid isPermaLink="false">http://learn-serve.org/?p=6868</guid> <description><![CDATA[<p>So far Zambia has been an amazing experience that I hope to be able to remember, so I can pass the memories to my children […]</p> <p>The post <a href="https://learn-serve.org/2017/07/11/learnserve-zambia-2017-farming-at-greenpop-79-2/">LearnServe Zambia 2017: Farming at Greenpop (7/9)</a> appeared first on <a href="https://learn-serve.org">LearnServe International</a>.</p> ]]></description> <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="9751" data-permalink="https://learn-serve.org/2017/07/11/learnserve-zambia-2017-farming-at-greenpop-79-2/mariam-zambia-200x300/" data-orig-file="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2017/07/Mariam-Zambia-200x300.jpg" data-orig-size="200,300" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="Mariam-Zambia-200×300" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2017/07/Mariam-Zambia-200x300-200x300.jpg" data-large-file="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2017/07/Mariam-Zambia-200x300.jpg" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-9751" src="http://learn-serve.org/assets/2017/07/Mariam-Zambia-200x300.jpg" alt="" width="200" height="300" />So far Zambia has been an amazing experience that I hope to be able to remember, so I can pass the memories to my children and grand children and great grand children. But since that won’t be happening anytime soon, I am happy to be able to share this beautiful experience with my readers. Going to Zambia wasn’t much of a big leap out of my comfort zone, considering I enjoy traveling. However, what made it so different for me was that I was traveling with a group of teenagers and a couple of adults who were not my family. I was unsure of what to expect and a bit nervous that our different personalities might clash. Luckily things are going much better than I expected.</p> <p>My most recent and probably happiest moments took place at Greenpop. Greenpop is an organization that promotes the preservation of everything green. While at Greenpop I was able to make many new friends from South Africa and other parts of the world as well. We did many fun activities, such as going out to the field to farm with local farmers, and teaching eco-education at one of the local schools. My favorite activity was farming, as we got to interact with many of the farmers’ wives. One of the wives even had the same name as me but spelled it differently. Above all I even saw a snake. We were playing around the straw grass with one of the wives and when I picked up a pile there was a black and brown striped snake underneath. One of the farmer’s wives started screaming but because of the language barrier I couldn’t understand whether she was yelling at me or warning about something till she started screaming and pointing vigorously to the ground. Although I learned the proper way of farming that day I also learned how to say snake in Tonga, which is the language most Zambians in Livingstone speak.</p> <p>Zambia has been a fun experience and I believe as a group we have grown much more than just individuals who cope and live with each other. I believe through our disagreements and agreements and laughs and tears we have now grown as a family #Zamfam.</p> <p>Mariam A., Wheaton High School</p> <p>The post <a href="https://learn-serve.org/2017/07/11/learnserve-zambia-2017-farming-at-greenpop-79-2/">LearnServe Zambia 2017: Farming at Greenpop (7/9)</a> appeared first on <a href="https://learn-serve.org">LearnServe International</a>.</p> ]]></content:encoded> <wfw:commentRss>https://learn-serve.org/2017/07/11/learnserve-zambia-2017-farming-at-greenpop-79-2/feed/</wfw:commentRss> <slash:comments>0</slash:comments> <post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">8339</post-id> </item> <item> <title>LearnServe Zambia 2017: Teaching At Daughters’ Vision (6/30)</title> <link>https://learn-serve.org/2017/07/02/learnserve-zambia-2017-teaching-at-daughters-vision-630-2/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=learnserve-zambia-2017-teaching-at-daughters-vision-630-2</link> <comments>https://learn-serve.org/2017/07/02/learnserve-zambia-2017-teaching-at-daughters-vision-630-2/#comments</comments> <dc:creator><![CDATA[learnserve]]></dc:creator> <pubDate>Sun, 02 Jul 2017 15:39:33 +0000</pubDate> <category><![CDATA[LearnServe Abroad]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Wheaton High School]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Zambia]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Zambia '17]]></category> <guid isPermaLink="false">http://learn-serve.org/?p=6645</guid> <description><![CDATA[<p>I am very appreciative of this experience in Zambia. Everyday there seems to be a new activity to look forward to. After walking to Daughter’s Vision School, we were greeted by the awaiting children. It was both refreshing and heartbreaking to see the kids. While teaching the reading class, I desperately wanted to teach them all I could before I left. Despite the small timeframe, we did our best to instill within the students the importance of knowledge</p> <p>Seeing how excited the kids were about learning motivated me to teach them the best that I could. One lesson that will hopefully stick with the students is when they learned how to write their names in English. The pure joy that they expressed made me reciprocate their energy and apply it into the lesson. For instance, the kids today were reviewing phonics while going along with a musical beat they enjoyed.</p> <p>Shortly afterwards, we organized a dance circle and personal health and relationship discussion with the other students. Each event granted an opportunity for young people to express themselves within a safe environment. One memorable moment from today is when I saw people, who would otherwise stay quiet, express themselves. In the healthy relationship discussion, us volunteers answered questions some Zambian youths had. These topics were focused around relationships, consent, intercourse, and safe habits. I thought it was beneficial for the young people to realize that they can incorporate these safe habits into their own lives since the rates of teen pregnancy, unsafe intercourse and STD’s is so high among Zambian youth.</p> <p>After the day’s events, some of us stayed behind at the school to paint and to spend time with the kids. It was beautiful to see the kids and the volunteers spending time together. I decided to read to a group of kids from both Daughters Vision and the neighborhood. I can say that all of them had an interest of learning.</p> <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="9883" data-permalink="https://learn-serve.org/2017/07/02/learnserve-zambia-2017-teaching-at-daughters-vision-630-2/resized_20170701_1506580/" data-orig-file="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2017/07/Resized_20170701_1506580.jpg" data-orig-size="320,240" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="Resized_20170701_1506580" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2017/07/Resized_20170701_1506580.jpg" data-large-file="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2017/07/Resized_20170701_1506580.jpg" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-9883" src="http://learn-serve.org/assets/2017/07/Resized_20170701_1506580.jpg" alt="" width="320" height="240" srcset="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2017/07/Resized_20170701_1506580.jpg 320w, https://learn-serve.org/assets/2017/07/Resized_20170701_1506580-230x173.jpg 230w" sizes="(max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px" /></p> <p>Walking back from the school during the evening was a different experience from what I am used to. I have never seen Zambia at night. The most memorable part to me is when we saw a choir singing and dancing. Immediately, I stopped being paranoid, and experienced the beautiful scene.</p> <p>I love teaching kids, especially here in Zambia. I look forward to when I can return here, and give them some of the time and education that they deserve.</p> <p>Anisa T., Wheaton High School</p> <p> </p> <p>The post <a href="https://learn-serve.org/2017/07/02/learnserve-zambia-2017-teaching-at-daughters-vision-630-2/">LearnServe Zambia 2017: Teaching At Daughters’ Vision (6/30)</a> appeared first on <a href="https://learn-serve.org">LearnServe International</a>.</p> ]]></content:encoded> <wfw:commentRss>https://learn-serve.org/2017/07/02/learnserve-zambia-2017-teaching-at-daughters-vision-630-2/feed/</wfw:commentRss> <slash:comments>4</slash:comments> <post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">8311</post-id> </item> <item> <title>LearnServe Zambia 2017: A lot of firsts and a game of uno (6/25-27/17)</title> <link>https://learn-serve.org/2017/06/28/learnserve-zambia-2017-a-lot-of-firsts-and-a-game-of-uno-625-27-2/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=learnserve-zambia-2017-a-lot-of-firsts-and-a-game-of-uno-625-27-2</link> <comments>https://learn-serve.org/2017/06/28/learnserve-zambia-2017-a-lot-of-firsts-and-a-game-of-uno-625-27-2/#comments</comments> <dc:creator><![CDATA[learnserve]]></dc:creator> <pubDate>Wed, 28 Jun 2017 22:03:29 +0000</pubDate> <category><![CDATA[LearnServe Abroad]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Wheaton High School]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Zambia]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Zambia '17]]></category> <guid isPermaLink="false">http://learn-serve.org/?p=6569</guid> <description><![CDATA[<p>DAY 1 As a group we are experiencing a lot of firsts…. from the first time having to share a room or the first time […]</p> <p>The post <a href="https://learn-serve.org/2017/06/28/learnserve-zambia-2017-a-lot-of-firsts-and-a-game-of-uno-625-27-2/">LearnServe Zambia 2017: A lot of firsts and a game of uno (6/25-27/17)</a> appeared first on <a href="https://learn-serve.org">LearnServe International</a>.</p> ]]></description> <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>DAY 1</p> <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="9910" data-permalink="https://learn-serve.org/2017/06/28/learnserve-zambia-2017-a-lot-of-firsts-and-a-game-of-uno-625-27-2/leah-zambia-200x300/" data-orig-file="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2017/06/Leah-Zambia-200x300.jpg" data-orig-size="200,300" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="Leah-Zambia-200×300" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2017/06/Leah-Zambia-200x300-200x300.jpg" data-large-file="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2017/06/Leah-Zambia-200x300.jpg" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-9910" src="http://learn-serve.org/assets/2017/06/Leah-Zambia-200x300.jpg" alt="" width="200" height="300" />As a group we are experiencing a lot of firsts…. from the first time having to share a room or the first time going out of the United States or, personally, my first time riding on a plane EVER! The 13-hour plane ride was rough as most of us have never flown for that long. Plus, most of us were scared of living so closely together. In reality, it has actually been extremely fun and eventful. We have become a family in such a short amount of time and I expect that the feelings will only continue to grow.</p> <p>When we first arrived at Dulles Airport, we met a 4 year old girl named Angel who was a very outgoing, goofy child who cared a lot about her Barbie. Her smile really brought light to us at having to leave our families for 2 ½ weeks. The airport was a very quiet experience because everyone was nervous, but once we got to walk around a little bit and talk to each other it didn’t seem so bad. Pretty soon, we were on our way, feeling pretty excited about the adventure in front of us.</p> <p>DAY 2</p> <p>When arriving in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, we were very excited to be off of the plane but anxious to get on another one. Our plans shifted a bit due to our extremely delayed flight and we ended up having to spend several hours in the airport. We reacted very positively by playing UNO and then something wonderful happened: Angel was there! It was obvious that some of us were becoming impatient though we weren’t saying anything and Angel once again came to save the day. She explained that she was 4 and that she was watching Barbie and Spongebob on the plane. She made us laugh a lot and most of us forgot about the time because we were living in the moment and the rest seemed irrelevant. Everyone was extremely tired so we were not too disappointed when we were told that we had to stay in a hotel for a night.</p> <p><figure id="attachment_9909" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-9909" style="width: 400px" class="wp-caption alignleft"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="9909" data-permalink="https://learn-serve.org/2017/06/28/learnserve-zambia-2017-a-lot-of-firsts-and-a-game-of-uno-625-27-2/20170626_123536-400x300/" data-orig-file="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2017/06/20170626_123536-400x300.jpg" data-orig-size="400,300" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"1.7","credit":"","camera":"SM-G930V","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1498480536","copyright":"","focal_length":"4.2","iso":"125","shutter_speed":"0.02","title":"","orientation":"1"}" data-image-title="20170626_123536-400×300" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>A game of uno and little Angel</p> " data-medium-file="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2017/06/20170626_123536-400x300-400x300.jpg" data-large-file="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2017/06/20170626_123536-400x300.jpg" class="size-full wp-image-9909" src="http://learn-serve.org/assets/2017/06/20170626_123536-400x300.jpg" alt="" width="400" height="300" srcset="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2017/06/20170626_123536-400x300.jpg 400w, https://learn-serve.org/assets/2017/06/20170626_123536-400x300-230x173.jpg 230w, https://learn-serve.org/assets/2017/06/20170626_123536-400x300-350x263.jpg 350w" sizes="(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-9909" class="wp-caption-text">A game of uno and little Angel</figcaption></figure></p> <p>When we stepped out of the airport, it was very chaotic. We had to fit 18 people in a small van for 30 minutes on the streets of one of the busiest cities I have ever seen. I saw a total of 2 stop signs and 1 traffic light the entire time we were driving, but the culture was compelling. Seeing kids coming up to our windows begging for money was hard to see and experience because they were so close to us and then being told by the driver to close the window was hard, but it gave us an opportunity to learn that we can not save the world, but we can do our part and our part was in Zambia. We got to the Tirar Hotel which was absolutely beautiful. The staff was so friendly and we got to then walk the streets of this amazing place that we had not expected to see. I guess the best memories and the greatest friendships come from the unexpected circumstances. I am not complaining.</p> <p>DAY 3</p> <p>When we woke up it was interesting because some of us were extremely tired due to the altitude of 8,000 feet and others were wide awake because of the time changes. But, we all came together for breakfast and ate as a family which was comforting. This time, we were able to more comfortably ride 2 busess to the airport instead of 1, which only took about 15 minutes, but gave us a chance to go buy souvenirs.</p> <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="9908" data-permalink="https://learn-serve.org/2017/06/28/learnserve-zambia-2017-a-lot-of-firsts-and-a-game-of-uno-625-27-2/20170626_112016-400x300/" data-orig-file="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2017/06/20170626_112016-400x300.jpg" data-orig-size="400,300" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"1.7","credit":"","camera":"SM-G930V","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1498476016","copyright":"","focal_length":"4.2","iso":"40","shutter_speed":"0.000441696113074","title":"","orientation":"1"}" data-image-title="20170626_112016-400×300" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2017/06/20170626_112016-400x300-400x300.jpg" data-large-file="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2017/06/20170626_112016-400x300.jpg" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-9908" src="http://learn-serve.org/assets/2017/06/20170626_112016-400x300.jpg" alt="" width="400" height="300" srcset="https://learn-serve.org/assets/2017/06/20170626_112016-400x300.jpg 400w, https://learn-serve.org/assets/2017/06/20170626_112016-400x300-230x173.jpg 230w, https://learn-serve.org/assets/2017/06/20170626_112016-400x300-350x263.jpg 350w" sizes="(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" />After our airport adventures, we got onto our next flight which luckily took less than 4 hours. It was an emotional experience touching down in Zambia because even though we had had complications, we were going to do wonderful things. We noticed a stark difference between the streets here and those of Addis Ababa with these seeming so much more peaceful and organized. The trees were beautiful and everything was so nice. It was scary at first because I thought that our driver was driving in the wrong lane, but turns out the steering wheel is on the right side of the car! We got to settle in to Juls Guesthouse where everyone was so welcoming. We went shopping and we really felt like we were all together. It feels like I have a bunch of new brothers and sisters. We had a wonderful dinner provided to us by the amazing workers at the guesthouse and we loved it. We had our evening reflection and it was nice to have everyone open up about how they are feeling.</p> <p>Though our day is almost over, I know that we will have many more adventures to talk about soon. The group is so goofy that I doubt there will be anything boring to tell. We learned that we all are experiencing these changes in different ways and that we have to work hard to keep everyone together but that doesn’t mean we don’t have fun because our UNO games, afterall, can get pretty competitive.</p> <p>Until next time,</p> <p>Leah T., Wheaton Senior High School</p> <p>The post <a href="https://learn-serve.org/2017/06/28/learnserve-zambia-2017-a-lot-of-firsts-and-a-game-of-uno-625-27-2/">LearnServe Zambia 2017: A lot of firsts and a game of uno (6/25-27/17)</a> appeared first on <a href="https://learn-serve.org">LearnServe International</a>.</p> ]]></content:encoded> <wfw:commentRss>https://learn-serve.org/2017/06/28/learnserve-zambia-2017-a-lot-of-firsts-and-a-game-of-uno-625-27-2/feed/</wfw:commentRss> <slash:comments>6</slash:comments> <post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">8303</post-id> </item> </channel> </rss>
