This marked the start of their year-long growth as civic leaders and social entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The weekend began with a mock town hall.&nbsp; Representing diverse stakeholder groups, our\nstudents\u2019 testimonies before the \u201cMayor\u201d and \u201cCity Council\u201d touched on climate\nchange, asthma, energy prices, and economic growth.&nbsp; Together, they imagined the city and world\nthey hope to live in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While this introductory activity was hypothetical, the\nsocial ventures our LearnServe Fellows create are not.&nbsp; Three years ago, Russell Corbin was sitting\nin similar seats as he began his tenure as a LearnServe Fellow.&nbsp; Then a sophomore at Richard Montgomery High\nSchool in Montgomery County, Maryland, Russell launched \u201cGreen Yellow Busses\nfor MCPS\u201d a campaign to promote \u201calternate fuel transport in the system that\nmost affects our next generations: schools.\u201d&nbsp;\nHe went on to serve as the environmental affairs coordinator for the\nMontgomery County Regional Student Government Association, where he advocated\nfor electric school buses at the local and state level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last month, Russell \u2013 now in his first year at Pomona\nCollege \u2013 reached out with two exciting updates.&nbsp; Plug In America recognized him with their\n2019 Student Award, national recognition for his electric vehicle\nadvocacy.&nbsp; More importantly, he shared,\nthe Maryland state government approved funding for MCPS to purchase its first\nelectric school bus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Greta Thundberg issued her pointed call for climate\naction, many of the adults in the room \u2013 and listening in from across the globe\n\u2013 seemed to wake up to the power of young people to create change.&nbsp; I, too, am in awe of the movement she has\nsparked.&nbsp; But I am not surprised.&nbsp; Her urgency, focus, and conviction remind me\nof Russell and of each of the hundreds of LearnServe students I have had the\nprivilege of working with over the past 12 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Greta\u2019s remarks and the wide-ranging response she received \u2013\nfrom the enthusiastic applause to the \u201chaters\u201d critiquing her on social and\nmainstream media \u2013 also reminded me that such vocal youth leadership does not\nhappen accidentally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In one breath, our LearnServe students gathered for their\nkickoff retreat channeled the vision and voice of Greta.&nbsp; They offered compelling clean energy policy\nproposals; drew on personal experience with discrimination to imagine a world\nin which systemic racism no longer exists; and spoke out against the gun\nviolence which has instilled fear in them and their communities.&nbsp; They know the change that needs to happen \u2013\nand have begun to see themselves as the changemakers that will shape their\nvision into reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a second, more vulnerable breath, however, the\nconversation is different.&nbsp; One student\nquestioned her own self-confidence, her fears that everyone around her was more\nprepared, more polished, more effective.&nbsp;\nA second questioned her own ability to speak out, worrying how other,\nlouder voices might shut her out.&nbsp; They\nknow that change needs to happen \u2013 but wonder if they will be good enough at\nmaking it happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The power of young people to create change is real.&nbsp; But it is also precarious.&nbsp; There is a very fine line between \u201cyouth\ntaking action\u201d and \u201cyouth inaction.\u201d&nbsp;\nWhile the students themselves are in the driver\u2019s seat, we as adults\nplay an important role.&nbsp; It is that\nimportant role that my colleagues and I keep front of mind as we begin our work\nwith this new cohort of LearnServe Fellows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some of the observations I have gleaned from more\nthan a decade of inspiring, challenging, and coaching young changemakers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Trust\nYouth.<\/strong>&nbsp; We have the opportunity to be\nour students\u2019 greatest cheerleaders, sounding boards, and shoulders to cry\non.&nbsp; We undermine our power as effective adult\nallies the moment we start to take over their ideas or allow our own doubts to\nfuel their own insecurities.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Embrace\nVulnerability. <\/strong>&nbsp;Young social\nentrepreneurs are taking a risk.&nbsp; They\nare stepping outside their comfort zone to share and act on something of\npersonal importance.&nbsp; We should be honest\nwith our feedback \u2013 that is an important part of taking them and their ideas\nseriously \u2013 while at the same time reinforcing a tone that is respectful,\nconstructive, and professional.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Celebrate\nChangemaking.&nbsp; <\/strong>As we celebrate the\nwork of famous youth activists, we collectively recognize what is possible when\nwe trust youth.&nbsp; At the same time, we\nrisk placing select individuals on an unattainable pedestal.&nbsp; In celebrating the successes, and failures,\nof less famous student social entrepreneurs, we reinforce the spirit of \u201cI can\ndo this, too.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In this new school year, may we be inspired and challenged by the emerging leaders and activists in our own lives \u2013 and may we continue to trust youth, embrace vulnerability, and celebrate changemaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Scott
