LearnServe Jamaica 2016, Day 15: A New Beginning

AndreFriday July 9, 2016 – Today is the closing day of this amazing experience. These 2 weeks have been very eye opening and have played a major part in my personal growth and development. Working at Maxfield Park and in the Blue Mountains made me really appreciate what I have back at home and it made want to work harder in school and definitely further my education.

Aside from what I learned while working with the children at MPCH, my favorite moment was seeing the children display their talents after our workshop. They danced and they sang and it was absolutely amazing. In that moment, my fundraising idea burst into my head. It’s really just powerful to see what these kids and teenagers have been able to do with minimal resources, and I want to help them have even greater opportunities and more resources to continue to grow in their particular passions.

Another favorite moment of mine was in the Blue Mountains when we went to Yuton’s farm. Yuton is an important figure in the Hagley Gap and Penlyne Castle community, and his farm is a major part of his ability to give so much to his community. His farm was massive, approximately 10 acres, including the land that is his father’s but he manages now. The farm is his primary method of income and it put a lot into perspective. Most adults that I know have a “typical” 9 to 5 and although there are farmers in the United States, it just does not compare. Yuton owns and manages most of the farm by himself, while managing various other responsibilities including providing direction for the Blue Mountain Project. He has various crops, including fresh fruits and vegetables, and of course his coffee which makes most of his income. Even more important was the sentimental value that the farm has for Yuton and his family.

We did an immense amount of work, but we definitely did a lot of fun activities and had outings. Our group has certainly made a bond and will carry on a friendship outside of LearnServe. We are all grateful for being chosen for Learn Serve Abroad Jamaica 2016. This experience has created 14 leaders and 14 very strategic and smart social entrepreneurs. Thank you on behalf of LSJ2016.
